Charlotte Ronson (Kunst)

*****
Designer. New York
Ahhhh. To be a Ronson. While our dreams of becoming an extended member of this talented family aren’t going to happen anytime soon, our next best bet is, in our opinion, playing with their personal treasures. Today, we bring you inside Charlotte Ronson’s NYC pad, where we got to witness first hand all the accessories and frocks that help make Ronson’s coveted style the definition of rock-and-roll-cool. Born in London and raised in New York, Ronson interned at places like Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bazaar and a myriad of fashion labels, where she began to hone her design skills. She began customizing her own vintage tees, her friends took notice, and shortly thereafter, she launched her first collection, C.Ronson – which eventually lead to her namesake collection of dynamic womenswear. She’s since collaborated with Urban Outfitters, JCPenney, and Uniqlo, and recently, she teamed up with Sephora for Charlotte Ronson Beauty – a line of cosmetics that channel the versatile designers aesthetic. “Prints are a big part of my design aesthetic, and a great floral will add that feminine and flirty quality that I’m always drawn to. They balance an otherwise edgy look,” says Ronson, who loves a good eBay find. But in her design process, it’s all about exploring different areas – from the rough around the edges East Village mentality to the sophistication of decades of the past. “I love exploring different eras when I design. Grunge has really become a singular influence, and I like exploring the nuances of the era. The Spring ‘12 collection is a modern take on the 20’s Victorian era. The demure details and soft color palettes are offset by denim and patchwork elements from the restless grunge decade”. But at the end of the day, it’s a family affair, and her apartment is adorned with jewelry designed by her mother, bags she’s ‘borrowed’ from her sister Annabel and Tom Binns gems gifted by Samantha. Come on in and take a look around, and remember, look…don’t touch.

Ronson always had an interest in fashion, however, she began designing after friends asked her to create pieces for them. She graduated from New York University (NYU) after majoring in Studio Art and interned at Harper's Bazaar, Rolling Stone, and with designer Cynthia Rowley.

In 2001, she began garnering attention from popular fashion magazines such as Vogue. By May 2002, Ronson had opened her flagship store on Elizabeth Street in New York. The Charlotte Ronson brand is partnered with Japanese apparel company, The Wall.

The original line of C. Ronson is now an offshoot of the larger Charlotte Ronson brand and the current New York store is now located on Mulberry Street. In 2008, Ronson designed a collaboration called "Play" by C. Ronson for Urban Outfitters, named after a mixtape her sister, Samantha Ronson, made for her. She designed a line for JCPenney called I 'Heart' Ronson. Spring 2009 was Ronson's first showing in Bryant Park, the main tents, for New York Fashion Week.

Charlotte Ronson's brand has been worn by celebrities such as Mischa Barton, Gisele Bündchen, Andy Dick, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss, Ellen Pompeo, Nicole Richie, Winona Ryder, Jessica Simpson, and Gwen Stefani.

Personal life Ronson was born the daughter of writer and socialite Ann Dexter-Jones and real estate mogul Laurence Ronson. She has said that her mother was strict when she was growing up and would not let her attend concerts.

She is related to politicians Malcolm Rifkind and Leon Brittan, and is the niece of businessman Gerald Ronson. Her parents are of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, with ancestors from Russia, Lithuania and Austria. Ronson's family name was originally Aaronson but her grandfather Henry Ronson changed it to Ronson.

She has two siblings, twin sister Samantha Ronson, who is a DJ, and older brother Mark Ronson, who is a music producer, singer/songwriter, and DJ as well. Ann Dexter-Jones and Laurence Ronson divorced. Ronson's mother re-married, to Mick Jones of Foreigner, and the family relocated to New York. Ronson has five half-siblings by her parents' remarriages.
