Destrøy Design represents a significant manifestation of the meeting between contemporary art and design items created by a number of international artists and designers over the last 40 years. The exhibition is curated by FRAC (Fonds Regional d’Art Contemporain) Nord-Pas de Calais in Dunkirk, France, and presents a selection of FRAC’s extensive collection. Over the last 25 years FRAC has especially focused on the connection between design and experimental contemporary art because of a wish to, among other things, create a debate about the influence of art, design and objects on our everyday lives. Destrøy Design investigates the exclusive quality of art works and the functionality of design objects – often with a sense of humour as when the artists at the exhibition comment, destroy, recreate or question famous design objects. In several instances the limits between artwork and utility item seem to be erased, and the notions about many of the utility items will be turned upside down.

The exhibition presents 37 artists/artist groups from 14 countries. The participating artists are: John M. Een selectie uit de collectie van Frac Nord-Pas de Calais
Het Frac Nord-Pas de Calais, een instelling in Duinkerken die zich wijdt aan hedendaagse kunst, was een van de eerste Franse instellingen die de aandacht vestigden op het belang van de rol die design speelt in de evolutie van het dagelijkse leven. Door deze avant-garde creaties met het werk van hedendaagse kunstenaars te confronteren, werd er een debat op gang gebracht dat onze verhouding tot (kunst)objecten in vraag stelt en ook de mogelijke invloed die ze kunnen krijgen in onze samenleving en onze onmiddellijke omgeving.
Destrøy/Design biedt een analyse van de unieke benadering van twee verschillende maar verbonden terreinen; de tentoonstelling focust op de complexe verhouding tussen de sterrenstatus van hedendaagse designers en kunstenaars en stelt de voortdurend veranderende positie en belang van het object in de geïndustrialiseerde wereld van vandaag in vraag.
