Georges Philibert Charles Maroniez (Kunst)

*****
Born January 1865 in Douai, France Maroniez (1865-1933) was a genre, seascape, and landscape painter; studied under Dermont-Breton. He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1889.

He started exhibiting at the Paris Salon, at the age of 22, paintings of port scenes of Brittany and Holland. Defying the label of “marine painter” he filled his genre scene paintings with Flemish Realism. With his use of a luminous, caressing light, he transposed the grey country roads of his birthplace with light, and painted eloquent snowy landscapes.

He won numerous honors and awards, including the Honorable Mention in 1891, a Third-class Medal in 1905, and a Second-class Medal in 1906. He also was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

In addition to peasant genre and landscape scenes, he is known as a painter of the sea and of the fisherman’s life. Maroniez captured in his seascapes, the magnetic beauty of an ocean sunset, and the tranquility that beauty and light brings.
