Howard Bradford (Kunst)
1919 ~ 2008
MONTEREY Howard Bradford passed away peacefully on April 30, 2008, at the age of 88. Howard was born in Toronto, Canada on July 14, 1919 and moved, at a young age, to Los Angeles, California. Howard spent his youth raising chickens and growing dahlias, the influence of which can be seen in his award-winning paintings. In his 20's, Howard was inspired to become an artist by his mentor, Elwood Decker. After serving in the Army during World War II, Howard took advantage of the opportunity provided by the GI Bill and enrolled in Chouinard Art Institute. While at Chouinard, Howard met Dorothy Bowman and they were later married. The two studied together at the Jepson Art Institute and San Francisco Art Institute.
Howard and Dorothy settled in Big Sur and became a part of the thriving art scene in the late 1950's and '60's. In 1960, Howard was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for creative printmaking.
He leaves behind his five children, Brock Bradford, Cyndra Bradford-Smith, Tal Bradford, Heather Denison and Delia Bradford-Forschino; his brother, Robert Bradford; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and many artist friends.
Howard was a Lifetime Member of the Carmel Art Association. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the following museums: The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Library of Congress; Boston Museum of Fine Arts; New York Public Library; Crocker Art Gallery; New Britain Museum; Le Bibliotheque National de France; Victoria & Albert Museum, England; Monterey Peninsula Art Museum. He can also be found in Who's Who in American Art: 1972 and Who's Who in the West.
Howard's ashes will be spread at sea in Big Sur and a lunch at Nepenthe with his family and friends to toast his life well lived will be held. Howard will be missed and will continue to be an inspiration to his family and friends.
