JAMES ALDRIDGE (Kunst)
1971, FARNBOROUGH, KENT, UK
Aldridges recent paintings and paper cut-out installations have been made in isolation in a Swedish forest to a soundtrack of heavy metal. They reveal a beautiful but morbid world filled with black crows, spider webs, moths, weeds, flowers, skulls and mountain ranges. This world appears to be personal and also universal, mundane and fantastical, contrived and emotional. His crisp yet unexpected palette includes wine, pink and mauve alongside blood red, black and steel grey.
Using field guides as a starting point for much of his imagery, his paintings recall hunting scenes and heavy metal album covers, Renaissance landscape and 17th century French scenic wallpaper. They are constructed using a reverse process, in which the background is painted around the foreground forms. A similar process is employed in his intricate cut outs where the negative space is removed, allowing the image to slowly come into being.
James Aldridge studied at the Royal College of Art in London. He won several awards such as the Chapter Residency & Solo Exhibition and the Rome Scholarship in Fine Art. He exhibited in London at David Risley Gallery, in Rome and New York and his work is acquired by renowned private and institutional collections.
