Jim van Overbeek (Kunst)
In recent years, Dutch designer and artist Jim van Overbeek (born 1960 in Antwerp, Belgium) has become famous with his 'New Pop' or 'Neo Iconic Art', in The Netherlands and many other countries. Jim van Overbeek (he was Dutch National Mountainbike Champion in 1988) studied Art & Design in Amsterdam and soon his work was shown at exhibitions in cultural centers such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, London, Cologne, Milan and Tokyo. It all started with big realistic (sport) paintings, but later on he broadened his range with work in a new style. In 1990, Jim van Overbeek met well-known Japanese artist Hajime Kato, who lived and worked in Paris. Kato encouraged him to experiment with styles and materials.
'Warm, vibrant colours, upbeat designs and hard-edged compositions. I developed my own mixed media on paper and canvas. There are so many influences involved here. Elements from daily life, from sports, from nature. Touched by New Pop and Cubism, combined with symbols from my Celtic and Native-American ancestors. A completely new mysterious world, so we gave it a new name: 'Neo Iconic'.
Jim van Overbeek, who now lives in Nijmegen, the oldest city of The Netherlands, is working for galleries, collectors and companies such as ABN AMRO Bank, Nike, O'Neill, Footlocker, Raleigh Cycles, Batavus Cycles, Shimano Japan, Fichtel & Sachs Germany, Spa, Scania, Elsevier and Intermec USA.
He was the Official Artist of the ABN AMRO Bank (ATP) World Tennis Tournament 2003 in Rotterdam, the World Championships Cycling 1991, the European Championships Mountainbike 2000 and the Dutch Nijmegen Four-Day Marches marchingpass 1998 - 2005.
During the fall 2005 the Art of Jim van Overbeek was present at the Gulbenkian Galleries in London, UK and the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. In the spring 2006 his work was presented in the famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for a short exhibition and a lot of media attention.
