Laura Mercier (Kunst)
Laura was raised in Provence, France, and at age 17 entered painting school in Paris, and with some coaxing from her mother, she decided to shift her talents from the canvas to the face. Specializing in makeup application she attended the prestigious Carita Beauty Institute. She excelled in her classes and subsequently represented Carita as a makeup artist and makeup teacher, working closely with renowned makeup artist Thibault Vabre.
In the mid 1980s Laura made the move to the United States and worked on the launch of American Elle and editorial spreads for magazines such as Allure, Vanity Fair, Glamour, W and InStyle. For 10 years she was the choice makeup artist for Vogue covers and editorials and developed a friendship with the brilliant fashion photographer Steven Meisel who introduced her to Madonna. Laura went on to work with Madonna on her looks for print, television and film for 8 years, and was fondly called the Rembrandt of Makeup Artists by the icon. She also worked with celebrity clients such as Mariah Carey and Celine Dion and corporations LOreal, Maybelline, Victorias Secret, Gap, Banana Republic and many others.
Subsequently Laura entered into a four-year contract with Elizabeth Arden, designing the makeup looks for all of their advertising campaigns, and also worked with Chanel on the companys beauty advertising campaigns in France.
As a working professional makeup artist, Laura saw the need for several products, particularly in face makeup, that were missing from the traditional cosmetics marketplace. Unable to find the formulas, colours, and textures she wanted, she began experimenting and mixing her own to fill the white space in makeup in creating the flawless complexion. Her search to find the products that worked for her professionally expanded to the desire to help every woman achieve her full beauty potential, and in 1996 the Laura Mercier line was born. The line, now in its fifteenth year, is available in 27 countries globally and in over 275 Sephora locations.
The Laura Mercier line has received numerous accolades from customers and magazine editors. Her Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 has won InStyle Magazines Best of Beauty four years in a row (2007-2011). Secret Camouflage was awarded Best of Beauty in October 2010 Allure and May 2010 InStyle. Also, Oprah Magazine 2009 O-wards were awarded for Nail Lacquer and 6 Well Custom Compact and in 2011 Gel Lip Colour in Dollface won the same honor. In addition, Laura has received numerous awards for her involvement in various advertising campaigns including Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Valentino, and Alberta Ferretti. In addition to Sarah Jessica Parker and Julia Roberts, Lauras clients include Madonna, Susan Sarandon, Isabella Rosellini, Brooke Shields, Ellen Barkin, Celine Dion, Meg Ryan, Ashley Judd, Meryl Streep and Julia Ormond.
Today, Laura feeds her passion through the creation of products and colour story trends for the Laura Mercier line, working closely with her brands creative teams throughout the year. She divides her time between New York City, Paris and Provence where she enjoys and finds inspiration painting.
