The Louis Vuitton legacy of elegance and innovation dates back to 1854, when the namesake designer opened a trunk-making shop in Paris. At the time, rounded-top trunks were the fashion because they allowed rainwater to roll off. But they were heavy, clumsy and couldn't be stacked in railway cars. Vuitton saw an opportunity.
He developed a flat-top bag that was lightweight and airtight. And beautiful, too. He covered his trunks with a signature grey "Trianon" canvas that became an immediate sensation, an iconic statement of fine living and sophisticated traveling. Surely the world's first "it" bag.

Interestingly, it wasn't until 1932 that Louis Vuitton introduced a handbag - though quite unintentionally it would seem. The "Noe" bag was created for champagne makers to easily transport several bottles at once. But it became a hit with Parisian women who began carrying it as a handbag - thus marking the entry of Louis Vuitton into the world of fashion accessories.

Now in its third century, Louis Vuitton remains one of the most coveted labels in the world - and one of the most recognizable symbols of status and sophistication.
