Peter Som (Kunst)

*****

President; Creative Director, Peter Som. New York
Award-winning designer, Peter Som has plenty of trophies to display on his mantle… and rightfully so! The San Fran-born designer and Parsons-grad won his first prize, the Issac Mizrahi Gold Thimble Award during his studies. And that was only the beginning! Som showed off his skills while interning with America's finest, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, then moved on to master his craft in the design department of Bill Blass. It didn't take long for the fashion flock to catch on, either. Following the 2001 debut of his namesake collection, Som was nominated not once, but twice, for the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent and later, selected as a semi-finalist for the first-ever, oh-so-prestigious Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund Initiative. Not bad for a kid straight out of school, right? Som’s success soared a few years later, when he returned to Bill Blass... as the Creative Director of womenswear. His eye for eclectic elegance goes beyond clothing, though—I mean, did you see his art collection and impeccably designed apartment? Makes sense that he’s currently working on a luxury line of linens with Sferra. After getting inside his closet, we realized Som loves him “som” Margiela—laceless sneakers, (he’s lazy, okay? Give the guy a break!) leather carry-alls… you name it! We seem to share a similar affinity for Charlotte Olympia (his collab with her was capital "G" Glam) and Céline. In fact, we admire his what-the-hell attitude to join the girls and bust out the two-tone Céline bag, which may we add, we own, too! And that’s not all we have in common—Som shared the stage with us at the recent Teen Vogue Fashion U panel. And let us tell you, he speaks like an angel! But it’s his trophies that speak for themselves: Som is a big winner.

Peter Som’s aesthetic of bold sophistication and eclectic elegance brings a fresh point of view to the fashion world. The San Francisco native began drawing at a young age - inspired by his architect parents and the laid-back elegance of the Bay Area. Today, Peter continues to draw from these early influences as he designs clothes for confidently elegant women. Known for his signature bold prints, Peter’s designs are feminine, quirky yet classic. In Peter’s world, social eccentrics like Peggy Guggenheim and Edie Beale stand alongside creative minds like Diane Arbus and Cecil Beaton.

Peter graduated with a degree in Art History from Connecticut College in 1993 and continued his studies at Parsons School of Design where he was a recipient of the Isaac Mizrahi Gold Thimble Award. Upon graduation, Peter honed his skills in the design room of the legendary Bill Blass.

The 2001 Peter debuted his namesake collection with a show at Bryant Park. Twice-nominated for the CFDA Perry Ellis Award for Emerging Talent, Peter was among the 10 semi finalists in the first ever Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund initiative.

Peter was appointed Creative Director of women’s wear for Bill Blass from 2007 to 2008. He served as a consultant for Tommy Hilfiger from 2009 to 2012, designing the women’s runway collection. In 2011 Peter’s interest in interior design resulted in a line of luxury bedding with famed home linens company Sferra.

Peter’s clothes continue to win accolades from buyers and critics alike and are regularly featured in major fashion publications, including Vogue, W, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and InStyle. A generation of stylish celebrities have embraced Peter’s collection, among them Scarlett Johansson, Claire Danes, Camilla Belle, Mandy Moore, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ginnifer Goodwin.

Peter has established himself as a singularly original voice in the world of fashion.
