Tom Virant - General Contractor

Founder of Virant Design Inc.
Tom was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and graduated with a Bachelors of Architecture from Virginia Tech College of Architecture and Urban Studies in 1997. After school he moved to Chicago and continued to learn about the building trades as a carpenter. After a 6 month break thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Tom headed back to Chicago and focused more on architecture, spending a number of years working in Architecture firms. At this point he realized that his real love was combining his work as a designer and a builder/craftsman. In an effort to learn more about fine craftsmanship, he took a 9-month internship at the Yestermorrow Design Build School in Warren, Vermont. During this influential time he studied everything from timberframing to concrete countertop construction. Tom continues to be a Home Design Build instructor at Yestermorrow each summer. At Yestermorrow he made the introduction of the design-build collaborative, Jersey Devil and worked with them on various projects across the country. Most recently he relocated to Northern Virginia to oversee the reconstruction of the Hoagie House after a devastating fire. He enjoys the complexities of combining the design and construction processes. Tom fully believes that being involved in both creates a superior end product.
