Remember Yi Zhou? The transcontinental Chinese art-world wunderkind who calls Karl Lagerfeld and DVF pals told ITG last year, “You know, I’ve always been a fan of Hitchcock and I think Hitchcock always had a flash appearance in his own stuff.” So who better to star in Emily’s beauty editorial in November Vogue China (she creative directed and styled it), which incorporated Yi's 3-D videos, than the artist herself?
With Raymond Meier shooting and Brit Hannah Murray on macquillage duty, Yi and Emily collaborated on a series of looks riffing on fall’s neo-goth makeup trend: blood red lips, chocolate/copper metallics, and rosy eyes (an ode to Emily’s current favorite eye shadow), set off by a mix of Reed Krakoff and McQueen fur, Chanel jewelry, and pale Theyskens’ Theory satin. Maybe it’s our Netflix selection in the days leading up to Halloween and Hurricane Sandy—Twilight (the 1st one, duh), Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Blade—but there’s just something so right about a slightly '90s ‘sexy vampire’ makeup look right now. The quickest (and least likely to raise eyebrows, though if you care about that sort of thing, yawn) solution is switching up your true red lipstick for a darker shade, and going easy on the eyes—opt for a brown liner/mascara instead of black; it’ll look fresher. And if you feel a little friskier…well, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
