Playing with our perceptions, Lindbergh is a gifted storyteller who seeks out hidden (and sometimes shocking) narratives. Startling honesty and ground-breaking originality give his images resonance and vitality. Once described as a "poet of glamour," Lindbergh is renowned for mixing rawness with high style. Paramaribo SPAN (English edition) - Thomas Meijer zu Schlochtern

Description
Paramaribo SPAN: Contemporary Art in Suriname lets Surinamese artists, writers and international exhibition producers talk about recent work in the visual arts (2000 - 2010) in Suriname and the lively cultural climate in Paramaribo.
refers in the various languages of Suriname to tension and excitement, as well as to bridging distances and to those who make up a team. In a series of interviews, 27 predominantly young visual artists (17 from Suriname and 10 from Rotterdam) speak about their ideas, working
methods and experiences. This creates a picture of the way in which Surinamese and Dutch artists think about art, the artistic process, their careers and the similarities and differences between them. Current cultural and social themes are also discussed, such as the development of the interior of the country, the vulnerability of the rainforest, the city and the diverse makeup of the population in Suriname.

Alice Neel: The Art of Not Sitting Pretty - Phoebe Hoban (Boek)

From Publishers Weekly
Hoban's (Basquiat: A Quick Killing in Art) latest biography is a sweeping portrait of a colorful subject, the painter Alice Neel. It is also an effective cultural history of the artistic and political scene in 20th-century New York. This well-documented work brings to life a "collector of souls" whose passion for painting the human figure at a time when abstraction was the rage resulted in years of financial hardship and obscurity. Neel emerges as a resolute survivor who lived by her convictions, both aesthetically and politically. A single mother committed to a bohemian lifestyle, Neel was also a supporter of political movements that ranged from Communism to feminism. While this biography suffers at times from overly detailed accounts of the supporting players in Neel's life and from the author's occasional repetition, it is immensely absorbing, and soars at the end as Neel, in the later decades of her life, finally receives "the recognition she so long deserved." Modigliani: A Life - Meryle Secrest (Boek)

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Secrest, respected biographer of art world personalities (Being Bernard Berenson), musicians such as Leonard Bernstein, and others, sets out in this volume to resurrect the reputation of the modernist painter Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920). Long the stuff of myth and sensationalism, Modigliani's life was fictionalized in book and film while his lifelong battle with tuberculosis was ignored and his art marginalized. Up until recently the literature has portrayed Modigliani as a ranting, drunken, stoned womanizer—"the archetypal accursed artist," as Secrest puts it. Rather, she says, he suffered throughout his life from various illnesses that he attempted to conceal. But the misperception contributed to Modigliani's status as a minor artist. The "separation of truth from fiction" is the author's cause. In her revisionist account, Secrest delves into numerous primary sources to weave together a comprehensive and well-rounded biography of the artist and to bring to life bohemian society in early 20th-century Paris. Additionally, the author surveys the history of Modigliani scholarship, the ongoing problem of forgeries of the artist's work, and the "chaotic field" of authentication. The result is an enjoyable read for all, and a most welcome contribution to Modigliani scholarship. (Mar.)

Henry Gillard Glindoni

Henry Gillard Glindoni (1852-1913) was born at Kennington Lane, one of a family of five who were left parentless at a very young age. His surname was originally Glindon; he changed it to Glindoni later for professional reasons.

From the age of 14 he had to fend for himself, which he did by taking various acting and painting jobs. He worked as a scene-painter for the theatre and augmenting his income by making sketches of actors and actresses with whom he appeared. He was also as a porcelain painter. He was encouraged to take up the study of art and studied at the Working Mens’ College and at the Castle Street School of Art.
