Felix Schlesinger (Kunst)

*****
Born in Hamburg October 9th, 1833, Felix Schlesinger studied at the Academy of Dusseldorf and under the tutelage of the German painter Rudolf Jordan. He spent part of his time working in Paris and eventually settled in Munich. It was there that he began to specialize in narrative genre scenes, often with a clear moral lesson for the viewer. His works primarily depict the antics of young, rosy-cheeked children, often with their favorite pet rabbit or kitten in tow. They bring a playful liveliness and sense of spontaneity to oil painting.

In a period in time when the world was becoming increasingly complex and urbanized, Schlesinger’s works served as a visual respite and homage to the quickly fading pastoral life. Like many German painters of the nineteenth century, Schlesinger’s work is highly detailed and has a meticulous porcelain-like finish, a tradition that dates by the German art of the early renaissance. His works currently reside in museums such as the Kunsthalle, Munich and the Kunsthalle Bremen.
