Lori Shorin (Kunst)

*****
Lori Shorin (v.1964) attended the renowned Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where she was trained in the classical figurative techniques of the old masters. Her experience living in Europe for four years and being immersed in its rich culture profoundly influences her current creations. It was in Florence where she realized her vision of creating multi-figure classical sculptures and has brought that vision with her back to the US. She is creating compositions influenced by her time in Italy and extensive travels in India.

Lori earned her MFA at the University of Pennsylvania and currently teaches in Greece for the New Hampshire Institute of Art in cooperation with the Hellenic American University in Athens, School of Visual Art in New York and at the Teaching Studio in Oyster Bay, NY. Lori exhibits in the US and Italy, her exhibitions include: The Royal Gallery, Providence, RI; Mariposa Museum, Peterborough, NH; Villa Palmerino, Florence, Italy: Islip Art Museum, Islip, NY; Essex Art Center, Lawrence, MA: Monserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA; Florence Academy of Art, Italy; The Vault Gallery, New Hampshire Institute of Art, Manchester, NH, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, NY. Recent awards include, honorable mention in the 2010-11 Art Renewal Center Salon and the Sara & Yasuo Kuniyoshi Foundation Scholarship.
“The vitality of life expressed in the faces and figures of people gets my attention. The eyes are of particular inspiration to me, for their capacity to convey deep, inner, human expressiveness – both emotional and spiritual. The gesture (suggested or portrayed) of the whole figure motivates me to capture the subtle and unique quality that describes an individual personality. I am attracted to finding those qualities that are uniquely special to an individual and yet common to all people at the same time.

My intensive, classical studies of the figure at the Florence Academy of Art have inspired my imagination especially as it relates to rhythm. By rhythm I mean the ebb and flow of the flesh over musculature, and musculature over bones, and how the dynamic energy that moves them all creates a visual symphony. I have gathered and organized a lot of information about the human form in my mind, which fuels my creative intuition. Through my observation of the human form and personal introspection and meditation, the physical and spiritual realms merge together harmoniously.

All of nature inspires me, but to me the human form and the spirit housed within it, has my full interest; that’s the bottom line.”
