Marroncultuur uit Suriname

Marrons behoren tot de oudste bevolkingsgroepen van Suriname. Zij zijn de nakomelingen van Afrikanen die sinds de zeventiende eeuw de plantageslavernij ontvluchtten en een onafhankelijk bestaan in het Surinaamse binnenland opbouwden. Hun cultuur werd bekend vanwege het prachtige houtsnijwerk en textiel en de zeer Afrikaans aandoende muziek en dans. Dat alles lijkt de laatste decennia snel te verdwijnen. Veel Marrons zijn – vaak door traumatische omstandigheden gedwongen – verhuisd naar Paramaribo, buurland Frans Guyana en Nederland. De meerderheid woont nu niet meer in het traditionele woongebied. Dat kan hun cultuur niet onberoerd laten.

The histories of West Africa and Surinam are inextricably entwined with the Western colonial past.
