Ik ben geboren in middelgrote Brabantse stad en opgegroeid in een aangrenzend dorp waar ik aan de zijlijn van onverstaanbare agrarische leeftijdsgenoten, die in mijn interesses en voorkomen aanleiding zagen me dagelijks een gezond pak slaag te geven, weinig goeie herinneringen heb. Bij de eerste legitieme kans heb ik dan ook meteen het gat verlaten en ben in 1988 het leger binnengestapt, heb van nabij de muur zien vallen, daarna veel te vroeg de huwelijksboot bestegen en deze geheel volgens verwachting direct weer laten zinken.

Does money seem to slip out of your pocket right even before you`ve earned it? Do you have a hard time keeping track of your finances? Does your credit card balance never seem to shrink regardless of the payments you make? If yes, then it’s high time to create a solid budget, or to improve your current one. Here are 10 indispensable tips to help you with your budgeting exercise.
1. Define your objectives: What do you want 5 to 10 years from now? Do you want to own a property, start a business or take a sabbatical and travel around the world? By identifying your short-term and long-term goals, you will be able to determine how much it will cost you to achieve them.

Ingredients (9-inch pie):

Short Crust Pastry
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon white sugar
1 stick unsalted butter, cut into little cubes, chilled
1/4 cup ice water

Filling

4 large eggs 

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 corn syrup

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

2 tablespoons bourbon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 cups pecan

 

Directions:

Prepare the crust by placing flour, salt and sugar in a food processor to mix. Add butter and process until the mixture resembles coarse meal. While the machine is running, pour in ice water slowly. The dough should hold together when pinched. Add a little more water if necessary.

Jeni Britton Bauer is the founder of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams and the author of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home.  I had the opportunity to chat with her during last summer’s Fancy Food Show in Washington, DC.
Was ice cream your first life? Or did you start out doing something else?
Well, I started my first ice cream business when I was 22 and now I’m going to be 39 this September, so it really is almost my only life. I was in college studying Art and Art History and had been working in a French pastry company since high school. They made everything in their kitchen, and they grew a lot of their own ingredients. It was an all French kitchen, with all French speaking employees.

Jaa, hier is ie dan. Eindelijk. Mijn tien andere tofste steden die ik tot nu toe heb mee mogen maken. Sinds ik het eerste lijstje met veel bloed, zweet en tranen heb samengesteld, kijk ik er al naar uit om nog tien steden in het zonnetje te zetten. Want dat er voor mijn grote liefde Philadelphia geen plek meer was, is natuurlijk geen goede zaak. Verder wist ik toen natuurlijk ook nog niet dat Edinburgh zo giga mind blowing leuk zou zijn. En Dunedin, oh boy. De Nederlandse steden heb ik er nog niet eens bij betrokken; zo moeilijk wilde ik het mezelf ook weer niet maken ;-) Dus, wederom in willekeurige volgorde, here it goes!
