Jean Antoine Bail (Kunst)
After beginning studies with his father the noted artist Jean Antoine Bail (1862-1921), he continued advance training in the studios of Gerome and Carolus Duran, the two leading artists and teachers of their time. With this substantial training and a prodigious natural ability, Joseph Bail marked his first success in 1878 at his first exhibition with the Salon des Artiste Francais. While his first canvases featured animals he soon turned the subject which would be his lifelong passion: genre interiors.
Bail applied his talent particularly to nuances of light and shadow. He would focus brilliant points of light into a room from an outside lightsource such as a door or window. His art was critically acclaimed as elegant, harmonious and original, reflecting the sentiments of the Dutch Old Masters while maintaining a decidedly French character. Joseph Bail received numerous honors including first and second class medals in 1886, 1887, 1889, a gold medal in 1900 at the Universal Expostion in Paris.
