It is useful to read an unapologetic, well-written, and often convincing single volume history of Israel that regards the establishment, survival, and prospering of that nation as a remarkable and admirable achievement. Van Creveld is a leading military historian and is on the faculty of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Predictably, his narrative is written from a Jewish perspective and traces the history of Israel from the first Zionist stirrings to the current rightward shift in Israeli politics. He doesn’t hesitate to criticize particular policies of various Israeli administrations, particularly regarding the promotion of West Bank settlements. Van Creveld often seems dismissive of and insensitive to the concerns and aspirations of Arabs on both sides of the Green Line. Still, he is aware that the current relationships with Palestinians are unsustainable, and he suggests a reasonable solution that could be workable. Korte inhoud: Genuanceerde, en zeker niet saaie algemene geschiedenis van Israël. Behandelt o. a. de conflicten met de Arabische staten en Palestijnen en de economische, culturele en politieke ontwikkelingen. Goede portretten van belangrijke Israëlische leiders, zoals Ben Gurion en Moshe Dayan.
Stelling: Israël is een succes.
Stijl: Helder, scherp, zakelijk.

Waardering:

Martin van Creveld staat bekend als een eigenzinnig militair historicus, iemand met uitgesproken meningen die gevestigde opvattingen wil bestrijden.
Maar in dit boek is Van Creveld er niet op uit om mythen te ontzenuwen of geheimen bloot te leggen. Hij wil in een kort bestek voor een algemeen publiek de geschiedenis van Israël vertellen.
Het is in het algemeen een positief verhaal. Israël is het grote succes van de twintigste eeuw. Van een uithoek van het Ottomaanse rijk veranderde het in een redelijk welvarend en vooruitstrevend land. Op het gebied van onderwijs,wetenschap, kunsten, en dergelijke kan het zich meten met veel grotere en rijkere landen, en dan hebben we het nog niet over de militaire prestaties.

Het is prettig dat de strijd met de Palestijnen niet centraal staat in dit boek. Veel boeken over de regio zijn uitsluitend daarop gericht en daarmee al zeer eenzijdig. Van Creveld besteedt ook veel aandacht aan economie, sociale ontwikkelingen, onderwijs, politiek en uiteraard de cruciale rol van religie.
Dat Van Creveld er in geslaagd is een genuanceerd verhaal te vertellen, is op zich al een prestatie. Mensen die in Israël een groot gevaar zien voor de wereldvrede of het uitsluitend als ‘apartheidsstaat’ willen betitelen, zullen zich aan dit boek ergeren.
Van Creveld heeft de protesten van het voorjaar en de zomer van 2011 niet voorzien, maar hij schrijft wel over armoede en ongelijkheid.
Het succes van Israël keert zich ook tegen het land en daar is Van Creveld niet blind voor. Overwinningen, zoals die in 1967, leidden tot escalatie. Ook zag premier Menachem Begin de vrede met Egypte niet als een aansporing om een regeling te treffen over de bezette gebieden, maar juist als een reden dat niet te doen. Beloftes om na de Oslo-verdragen verdere afspraken te maken, werden niet gehouden. Van Creveld is voor een zo spoedig mogelijke regeling, niet uit sympathie voor de Palestijnen, maar omdat Israël zoveel mogelijk de Palestijnen van zich af moet duwen. Een muur is daarbij niet ondenkbaar. Een toekomst zonder oorlog is volgens hem mogelijk, al zal het geen perfecte vrede zijn.
Israël zal geen ‘Scandinavië’ worden, maar daar is Van Creveld uiteindelijk wel blij om. Want daar is het maar saai.
